What My Mother Means to Me
"Why do we have mothers?”
“You [mothers] are the real builders of the nation wherever you live, for you have created homes of strength and peace and security. These become the very sinew of any nation.” Gordon B. Hinckley, “Women of the Church,” Ensign, Nov 1996, 67
Mothers are to make their home a place of refuge for their children. Mothers should try to have the spirit in their home, so that her children and husband can feel the spirit, too. Moms teach their kids to follow the commandments of God, and to be: “honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men…and to believe all things…hope all things…endure many things…and to be able to endure all things.
“The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force…Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of the children,” (A Proclamation to the World).
TV Show:
This mother meets an old friend, and they meet up together at a little restaurant. Her friend tells her that she is about to get a huge promotion in her job. She gets a call, and she hides the fact that she got the promotion. She then reluctantly reveals to the mother that yes she did get the promotion. The mother learns that her friend was hiding that fact from her because she “pitied her”. Her friend though that being a mother and homemaker was not a great pursuit in life. Every person’s perspectives are different, but in my opinion, the greatest job in the world is to be a mother. I am so excited to have children and to be able to care for them. Although the friend thought that being a mother was lame, and not a real job, I think it is definitely one of the most rewarding real jobs, although it can be a challenge.
Elder Russell M. Nelson:
“During my professional career as a doctor of medicine, I was occasionally asked why I chose to do that difficult work. I responded with my opinion that the highest and noblest work in this life is that of a mother. Since that option was not available to me, I thought that caring for the sick might come close. I tried to care for my patients as compassionately and competently as Mother cared for me.
The First Presidency has said: “Motherhood is near to divinity. It is the highest, holiest service to be assumed by mankind” (in James R. Clark, comp., Messages of the First Presidency, 6 vols., Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1965–75, 6:178).
Another role of the mother:
“The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force…Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of the children,” (A Proclamation to the World). Mothers are the ones responsible to care for their children and to help them grow and learn how to be righteous.
Being a mother requires hard work, and dedication. I think that sometimes mothers may feel just like giving up. But I know for sure that my mother loves her children and would do anything for us. She has done so much for me and my siblings and dad, and even other family members, that we can never fully pay her back. My brother recently left on a mission. He is at the MTC now, and is leaving for the Dominican Republic this Thursday. My mom has written him every single day, and is even going to feed his fish on fishville on facebook for the next two years. She has packed all of my siblings and my lunches since we started school, and she is like a best friend to me. I can talk to her about anything, which is why I think she is the best mother ever.
-Proverbs 31:28:
Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
